RV-garage homes in Brevard County.

If the motorhome or the boat has to live at home, the garage door matters more than the kitchen.

Why an RV garage and not the driveway

Brevard County's code limits RVs and trailers parked in the front yard: one, on the driveway, set back from the side line and parked perpendicular to the street. Cities have their own rules, so check the current code for the specific address.

HOAs are the bigger limit. Under Florida Statutes 720.3045, an HOA can't prohibit items, boats and RVs included, that you keep out of sight of the street and the neighbors. An enclosed RV garage keeps the RV at home even in a community with strict parking rules.

How big the door has to be

Florida limits vehicles to 13 feet 6 inches high and 102 inches wide, and motor homes to 45 feet long. Industry guidance for a Class A motorhome is a door 12 to 14 feet tall. A 14-foot door clears the legal maximum height.

Measure the door opening, the bay depth and the ceiling, and check the driveway approach. A tall door on a short, steep driveway doesn't help.

Where they turn up

Gibraltar Builders has two floor plans with an RV bay, the King Willow and the Tradesman. Larger lots in Palm Bay and parts of Merritt Island leave room for a detached building. Tell us the rig and we'll filter by door height, not just by 'RV garage' in the listing.

Questions we get.

Can an HOA stop me from keeping an RV in Florida?

An HOA cannot prohibit items kept out of sight of the street and neighbors, including boats and RVs, under Florida Statutes 720.3045. An enclosed RV garage is the usual answer.

How tall should an RV garage door be?

Industry guidance is 12 to 14 feet for a Class A motorhome. Florida allows vehicles up to 13 feet 6 inches high, which a 14-foot door clears.
